I am in the process of moving my blog over to http://www.shirleyman.com/blog. The new RSS feed is http://feeds.feedburner.com/shirleymanblog. I will delete this blog once I figure out the best way to redirect old traffic.

As you can see, the new blog looks pretty dull and incomplete for now, but I will update it incrementally. To answer my own question posted in the very first post – 5 years and 310 days.

My 2009 Best Buy

5. Rain Boots
I Love My Rain Boots
After 12 years of living in Vancouver, I finally bought my first pair of rain boots. Every time I wear them in the rain/snow, I ask myself why didn’t I get them earlier. It took me a while to find the ones I like, too. Most of them either look too kiddo, or too fish market-ish.

4. Dell Mini 10v (Hackintosh’d)
Project Only 200 - 82: Perfect Conference Setup
Running OSX on a $300 netbook is about the most frugal thing I have done. I love travelling with my netbook. Most of the time I just check it in with my luggage so I don’t need to worry about the TSAs.

3. Kindle
Project Only 200: - 167: Kindle (White2)
I already feel more literate than I used to be. Thanks to your generous gift dollars, I have charged up my Kindle with a few books and I enjoy all of them. The Kindle will make my upcoming 13 hour flight way shorter. The only thing I hate about it is so many people, after knowing I own one, told me why they decided not to get one, but you can tell they never needed or wanted one. If you don’t buy books, the Kindle’ s not for you, period.

2. Panasonic Lumix LX3
Project Only 200 - 13: I Bought a LX3
I have a lot of bumpy relationships with my digital cameras. 2 Nikons, 3 Canons, 1 Ricoh and finally I am settled with a Panasonic. I love taking videos with it, the quality is amazing. I like the LX3 even more than the good old IXY 400 (Sorry, if you aren’t familiar with my camera love life). I would have used it a lot more if I didn’t have an iPhone.

1. iPhone 3GS
Project Only 200 - 14: I Bought a 3GS
I am pretty up-to-date with gadgets and I have bought a lot of them, including the iPhone 2G, but the 3GS still managed to WOW me. Instead of using pay-as-you-go with no data on a 2G, I am now locked to a contract and paying a premium fee monthly for the iPhone plan. I can’t speak for other people, but for someone who is addicted to the internet, constantly reading 180+ feeds on RSS, there is nothing better than being locked to a contract and paying a premium fee monthy for the iPhone plan. There are too many things I love about it.

Honorary Mention: Pure Komachi 2
Project Only 200 - 98: New Knife
I don’t even cook at home, but sometimes I feel like buying something to chop so I can use this knife. It’s super sharp and I almost always cut myself every time I use it, but it’s pink and I am happy.

Watch this video, because you are invited. I need to borrow a token black gentleman in a bright colour shirt for my Windows 7 launch party. Oh man, I can’t wait to receive my party napkins and tote bags.

Here’s my party application:

Party Name: Shirley Wants a Copy of Windows 7 Party
Party Mantra: It’s all about Shirley getting a free copy of Windows and her friends getting free tote bags.
Details: Bring your own harddisk, so we can format and defrag all night long.

Kindergarten-5Handwritten Blog

Using the SiuyeeWrites font.

Here is the human readable version, just in case:

One of my earliest memories is writing endless pages of copybook in kindergarten. I remember getting caught for not following the stroke orders and the teacher made me redo my homework. It’s not like I didn’t know how. There were little arrows on the page showing the stroke order, but I found it faster to do it my way. I would flip through the pages and fill out all the vertical strokes in all the numbers and alphabets (1, 4, 7, 9, B, D, E, F..), and then I would flip to the first page again and do a pass on the horizontal strokes. Everyone was working on the “B” pages, but I had the “K” pages half done. The teacher was right and that is why my handwriting is so horrible. My Chinese/Kanji writing is even worse. Since I didn’t follow the stroke orders when I learned the words, I have to construct a mental image of the word before I write it. “There is a box in the bottom, one on the right with a a cross inside, and then there is water on the side.”. Whenever there is a box I just draw a circle, because a box has four strokes and a circle only has one.

My Live Stream, Now on FriendFeed

Posted 1 year, 9 months ago at 7:43 pm. 0 comments

Not too long ago, I dumped Tumblr for FriendFeed as my live stream. I am going to integrate it to this site eventually, but for now you can subscribe to the RSS feed, or see it here.

What’s on my FriendFeed:

  • Posts from this blog.
  • Flickr updates, which I have removed from this site’ s feed. Most of my photos don’t get posted on this blog, so you catch them from the FriendFeed.
  • YouTube videos I fav’d.
  • Google Reader shared items.
  • Videos uploaded to vimeo (rarely used now, since Flickr supports videos).
  • Diggs and Reddits.
  • LinkIn updates, Twitter brain farts and Pownce updates (not used at all).
  • My bookmarks on del.icio.us. I don’t bookmark with my browser.

See, Tumblr’ s five feed limit just can’t handle my needs. :)
